U.S. imposes visa restrictions on Ethiopian and Eritrean Officials

Addis Ababa, May 23, 2021 – (EthioHeadlines) – The U.S. imposes visa restrictions over the conflict in Tigray region. The restrictions are issued by the US Secretary of States, Antony J. Blinken and titled “United States’ Actions to Press for the Resolutions of the Crisis in the Tigray Region of Ethiopia.”

The visa restrictions are imposed on “any current and former Ethiopian or Eritrean government officials, members of the security forces, or other individuals – to include Amhara regional and irregular forces and members of the Tigray people’s liberations Front (TPLF) —responsible for, or complicit in, undermining resolution of the crisis in Tigray.”

The visa restrictions are comprehensive as it includes people who have “conducted wrongful violence or other abuses”, “those who have hindered access to humanitarian assistance”, and “immediate family members of such persons.”

Additionally, the US has “imposed wide-ranging restrictions on economic and security assistance to Ethiopia.” The restriction will also affect US’s defense trade control policy. Current ongoing assistance to Ethiopia will be limited to humanitarian assistance and certain critical aid including “health, food security, basic education, support for women and girls, human rights and democracy, good governance, and conflict mitigation, consistent with available authorities.”

The statement refers to the current reality in Tigray. “People in Tigray continue to suffer human rights violations, abuses, and atrocities, and urgently needed humanitarian relief is being blocked by the Ethiopian and Eritrean militaries as well as other armed actors…. The United States condemns in the strongest terms the killings, forced removals, systemic sexual violence, and other human rights violations and abuses.”
