Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the US Ambassador to the UN Urged Eritrean Forces to Leave Ethiopia Immediately

Washington, April 20, 2021 (EthioHeadlines) – “The Eritrean government must withdraw its forces from Ethiopia immediately,” Thomas-Greenfield said.

The international community has been pressing PM Abiy for Eritrean troops to leave the Tigray region immediately and to hold those responsible for human rights abuses, lootings, and sexual violence responsible.  In a recognition that Eritrean forces are now in Tigray and deployed to other parts of Ethiopia, especially the Oromia regional state. There is a report that a large number of Eritrean forces are given Ethiopian Defense Force Uniforms and deployed in Benishangul-Gumuz and Western Oromia. 

In addition, Thomas-Greenfield stressed that Amhara regional forces must also leave Tigray and those “responsible for human rights violations”  be held accountable.

The US ambassador also called “for an end to hostilities and for the Ethiopian government to deliver upon a political settlement of the crisis; permit unhindered humanitarian access; allow for independent, international investigations into human rights abuses and violations; protect civilians; enact the immediate withdrawal of Eritrean and Amhara regional forces from Tigray and hold those responsible for human rights violations accountable.”
