Addis Ababa, May 22, 2021 – (EthioHeadlines) – The “Hands Off Ethiopia” campaign organized by Abiy’s henchmen and backed by Amhara elites in the West turned out to be a disaster.
The purpose of the campaign was to whip up support for the disastrous policy of PM Abiy’s government as pressure against the government by the EU and USA is mounting.
The “Stop Amhara Genocide” movement were among the participants at the “Hands Off Ethiopia” rally. The crowd were spotted using the picture of a teenager who was executed point blank by the government in Dambii Dollo with a caption “Stop Amhara Genocide.”
The absurd claim underscores the fundamental problem of false narrative pushed by Amhara elites. Many accuse these elites of sponsoring the killings of non-Amhara and turn around and claim that the Amhara were killed. It should be notes that Wondimu was executed in a public square accused of being an Oromo collaborator of “Arba Torbe.”
Reports from Addis Ababa indicate that the “Hands off Ethiopia” campaign’s attempt to hand deliver government prepared propaganda letters to Embassies in Addis Ababa failed. The embassies refused to receive these propaganda letters. The organizers are disappointed and perhaps anxious about their call for violence.
On May 19, Andargachew Tsige, a close confidante of Abiy called for violence against Embassies. The call for violence comes after the U.S., EU, and Western countries called for the withdrawal of Eritrean troops out of Tigray. Ethiopia claims this as an interference in Ethiopia’s internal affairs. Many observers consider Ethiopia’s claim to be absurd in the face of documented crimes against humanity, war crimes, ethnic cleansing, and sexual violence in Tigray.
Government Sanctioned Crimes
Ethiopian armed forces, Eritrean troops, and Amhara forces are accused of genocide, looting, and sexual violence in Tigray. Apart from Tigray the country has regressed into chaos and is on the verge of collapse. State violence is rampant especially in Oromia and Benishangul-Gumuz.
The Patriarch of Ethiopian Orthodox Church, Abune Mathias, declared that “genocide” is being committed in Tigray in a video recorded and carried out of Ethiopia. The Patriarch accused “they [Abiy and Isaias governments] want to destroy Tigray.” PM Abiy’s attack dogs in and out of the church are openly criticizing the Patriarch since the video was released.
Eritrean troops are blocking humanitarian aid from reaching people in need. Starvation is used as a weapon in Tigray. The US Embassy in Addis Ababa reported that 11 aid workers, 10 in Tigray and in one other area, have been killed since the war in Tigray started.
Government Sanctioned Executions
The public execution of a young Oromo named Wondimu Kebede at a public gathering in Dambii Dollo public square was widely reported. A Government official appeared on Voice of America and acknowledged that the execution was government sanctioned. He also added that such killings of suspects will continue. It appears the official’s predictions are holding as a number of people have been executed in different parts of Oromia since Wondimu’s execution.
Crime and Punishment
These are typical war crimes deserves to be prosecuted at International Criminal Court. Not surprisingly, Ethiopia has never been a signatory to the international agreement that is established the criminal court; thus, cannot be prosecuted. However, the criminals could be brought to justice with UN Security Council referral.
The onus is upon the Western world who have already alleged the regime has committed war crimes to use the world body and refer Abiy and Esaias regimes to the International tribunal.
